Seasonal changes in Florida can be subtle, even to long time residents. Join us for a guided walk as we look for evidence of the changing seasons along the trail. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must, and water and a hat are recommended. Pre-registration is required. This event is free and open to the public. All ages welcome - children younger than 6 may find this hike challenging.
Open Classroom - Discovering Nature and Culture with Your Child

Discover nature and culture with your child during an open classroom session with archaeological activities. Explore materials from a real archaeology dig in a “sifting through the past” activity. Hands-on aboriginal tools teach techniques of the ancient people of this region. Stop by our classroom anytime between 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm to participate in a variety of self-guided activities that will intrigue your child about past cultures. No registration required. This event is free and open to the public. Recommended for families.
Book Time at Brooker Creek: The Very Clumsy Click Beetle

This program is designed to introduce pre-school children to the wonders of the natural world. This week features The Very Clumsy Click Beetle by Eric Carle. This delightful tale focuses on a young click beetle as it learns to do what older beetles can already do so well. This story teaches children that practice pays off while introducing them to a species commonly found in Florida’s forests. This program also includes a craft, game or other hands-on activity related to the story. Pre-registration is required for this free program. Spaces are limited, so register early! Recommended ages: 3 - 5.
It’s the Photographer, not the Camera!

Bring your camera and join local nature photographers Karl and Kathleen Nichter for this two-hour workshop. Learn how to apply basic digital photography techniques and photo composition to create pleasing nature pictures with your own camera. Book Time programs are designed to introduce pre-school children to the wonders of the natural world. This week features Forest Bright, Forest Night by Jennifer Ward. Some forest animals are awake during the day and sleep at night, while others are awake at night and sleep the day away. This beautifully illustrated story introduces us to the activities of both the day and the night shift of the forest. The program also includes a craft, game or other hands-on activity related to the story. Pre-registration is required for this free program. Spaces are limited, so register early! Recommended ages: 3 - 5.
Teacher Training Workshop

Brooker Creek Preserve is the perfect place to connect classroom concepts to the natural world. This workshop provides teachers with the training and materials necessary to design and lead learning experiences tailored to their classroom curriculum goals. Workshops are intended for teachers willing to lead their own field trips and are required of those teachers interested in using the Center’s equipment and facilities other than public trails and the exhibit hall. Pre-registration is required. Call and ask for the educator in charge of this workshop for more information or to register. This event is free and open to the public. Great for teachers of all grade levels. |
