Take a walk through time on this Saturday morning guided hike. Explore 0.7-miles of scenic nature trails as we look at how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by those changes. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must, and water and a hat are recommended. Please register by noon on the Friday prior to the hike of your choice. Free. All ages welcome - children younger than 6 may find this hike challenging.
Brooker Basics: Upland Ecosystems

The Brooker Basics Workshops are a series of programs offered year-round to give participants a general overview of the variety of environments and organisms that can be found at Brooker Creek Preserve. Each program consists of two components, a short classroom presentation followed by a field session. Sturdy closed-toe shoes and water are a must, while long pants, a hat and sunscreen are recommended. Pre-registration is required for this free workshop. Recommended ages: best for adults, suitable for children ages 12 and up.

This program is designed to connect pre-school children to the wonders of the natural world. This week features Gotta Go! Gotta Go! by Sam Swope. A “creepy-crawly bug” must get to Mexico! Join us to discover the mystery of what she is and why she undertakes this long journey. This program also includes a craft, game or other hands-on activity related to the story. Spaces are limited so register early! Pre-registration is required for this free event. Recommended ages: 3 – 5.
Gopher Tortoise: Essential Excavator

The gopher tortoise and its burrows play an important role in Florida’s upland ecosystems. Due to development pressures and other factors, the species is in decline. Join environmental scientist Cynthia Wheeler to learn more about this essential excavator and what is being done to protect it. This program includes a short outdoor excursion to look for tortoise burrows. Pre-registration is required for this free event and space is limited. Recommended ages: best for adults and children ages 12 and up.
Open Classroom - Discovering Nature with Your Child

Stop by our classroom anytime between 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm to participate in a variety of self-guided nature games and activities that answer these questions and many more. Meet the Artist – Florida Landscapes and Seascapes

Klaus Porsch invites you to walk right into his paintings to feel the sun on your face and smell the tang of salt air. Whether depicting a summer day on the Gulf of Mexico or a peaceful sunset his beautifully detailed landscapes and seascapes reflect his love of Florida. Painting en plein air and in his studio, Klaus Porsch communicates his attachment to the unique beauty of Florida’s natural environments. Join us for a chance to meet the artist and learn more about his unique body of work at this special 3-hour social. The artist will demonstrate his techniques and answer questions throughout the reception. Visitors can enjoy this exhibit during normal Center hours through July 30, 2010.
